Phoenix is the capital of Arizona and the seat of Maricopa County, located along the Salt River in the south-central part of the state within the Sonoran Desert. It is the fifth-largest city in the United States and serves as a financial, communications, and transportation hub for the surrounding Valley of the Sun region.

Schools

Phoenix is served by multiple school districts rather than a single system. The Phoenix Union High School District covers a 220 square mile area of metro Phoenix with 23 schools, and its boundaries were largely coextensive with the city of Phoenix prior to the 1960s, now also covering portions of Glendale, Paradise Valley, and Scottsdale. Elementary-level students are served by separate K-8 districts such as the Phoenix Elementary School District, established in 1871 with boundaries from 16th Street on the east to 23rd Avenue on the west, and the Isaac Elementary School District, which feeds into Phoenix Union. Specific attendance boundaries can be looked up through each district's website, such as pxu.org for Phoenix Union.

Getting around

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport sits within the city and connects to the Valley Metro Rail light rail system via the free PHX Sky Train, an automated people mover that runs 24 hours a day from the 44th Street/Washington station. The Valley Metro Rail light rail system has 50 stations and covers 38.5 miles of track through Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa, with light rail service starting at 4:30 a.m. on weekdays. Valley Metro also operates a bus system with 104 routes, including local, express, and shuttle service throughout the region.

Homes and housing

The City of Phoenix covers a land area of approximately 517 to 519 square miles, with Census figures putting the 2020 population at 1,608,139. Downtown's Central City Village, one of the city's urban villages, spans roughly 10 square miles and includes the area directly east near Sky Harbor.
