Schools

Several school districts serve parts of Glendale. The Glendale Elementary School District operates 17 schools serving grades K-8 in a central portion of the city, and its graduates feed into the Glendale Union High School District, which operates nine comprehensive high schools serving most of Glendale and part of Phoenix. Other districts reaching parts of the city include the Pendergast Elementary School District, with boundaries from Glendale Avenue on the north to I-10 on the south, and the Peoria Unified School District, which spans Glendale, Peoria, Surprise, and Youngtown. Parents can check the Glendale Area Chamber of Commerce school district page or individual district websites (such as pesd92.org) to look up specific attendance boundaries.

Getting around

Loop 101 (the Agua Fria Freeway) runs through Glendale, entering from the south at the Camelback Road interchange and passing State Farm Stadium and Desert Diamond Arena before continuing north and curving east near Arrowhead Towne Center. The freeway connects Glendale to Peoria, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, and Chandler. Valley Metro provides regional bus and light rail service across the Phoenix area, though a proposed light rail extension into downtown Glendale was not advanced after the city council directed staff against the route in October 2017.

Homes and housing

Glendale's housing stock includes single-family detached homes, which account for 59.20% of the city's housing units, along with large apartment complexes or high-rise apartments (25.07%) and mobile homes or trailers (5.72%). About 20.53% of housing was built in 2000 or later, while 10.86% dates from 1940-1969 and 1.07% predates 1939. The Arrowhead area, in the north of the city, was largely built out in the 1980s and 1990s, while Historic Downtown Glendale features older homes and a mid-century downtown core with red brick sidewalks.

Things to do

The Westgate Entertainment District, next to State Farm Stadium, is an outdoor hub for shopping and dining. Arrowhead Towne Center offers more than 180 shops and restaurants. Glendale's historic downtown includes red brick sidewalks and small businesses.
